This is the growling death slab. Albee for scale.

Following “White Board Wednesday” Maui surfers were treated to another week of solid swell. February has kicked off with a bang. On the first of the month, Albee Layer and friends paddled into a growling death slab and managed to make it out alive. “Billy and Francisco were out the back, this 15-foot wave came through and they both bailed and tried to swim through it; it was one of the scariest waves I’ve ever seen. It didn’t even break when they were swimming through, and still sucked them back and over the falls, and threw them to the bottom. They were so rattled,” Layer said in an interview with Stab Magazine.

Rainbow country.

Meanwhile, others opted to get barreled at Honolua, or ventured elsewhere to surf without a crowd. The best part was, everyone had plenty of options. This week a new NW swell is picking up, and will hit advisory levels. Stay tuned to catch all the action. Mahalo to Dave Gomez for sharing his media. You can see more of his photos here, and video here.
