MAPA & Seabury Hall Present The Crucible

Seabury Hall Performing Arts together with the Maui Academy of Performing Arts present a student and adult production of Arthur Miller’s Salem witch trial classic, The Crucible, directed in the full round by David C. Johnston.

Show times are Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 24-25 and March 3-4 at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, March 5 at 3 p.m. at the ʻAʻaliʻikūhonua Creative Arts Center at Seabury Hall in Makawao.  Admission is $12 for Adults, $10 for kupuna and $5 for students. Reservations can be made online at Seaburyhall.org.

Inspired by the infamous McCarthy hearings of the 1950s, The Crucible dramatizes the Salem witch trials of 1692, delving into dark desires and hidden agendas that have devastating consequences for an entire town. Bearing witness to a society in crisis and the horrible things people do to themselves, it is a timely parable of our contemporary society.

Audiences seated on all four sides of the stage will watch Seniors Zander Medrano and Eliza Wright play Mr. and Mrs. Proctor, a farming couple drawn into the hysteria by their servants Abigail Williams (Camille Erdman ‘18) and Mary Warren (Marley Mehring ‘18). When the local reverend (Kalan Birnie ‘17) finds the girls dancing in the woods, Reverend Hale (Carver Glomb ‘19) and judges Danforth and Hathorne (Todd Van Amburgh and Vinnie Linares) are drawn into the escalating crisis.

“Bringing such a vital and enduring piece of theatre to the stage is an exciting artistic adventure in itself. Being part of a process joining two of Maui’s prominent educational and artistic organizations deepens the experience for all of us,” says director David Johnston.

“What a joy to participate with Seabury student actors and seasoned community players as we grapple with the profound philosophical ideas and heart-wrenching emotional truths of this play. This piece challenges us to examine who we are as individuals and consider what shapes us as a community,” said Johnston.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Seabury Hall to partner with MAPA in producing The Crucible, one of the most important plays in the American canon,” says Sarah M. Bakhiet, Seabury Hall’s Head of School.
