Rubbish & Brush Fires in West Maui

A rubbish fire and a brush fire occurred in West Maui on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017.

Early Monday morning, Lahaina firefighters extinguished a rubbish fire in a vacant lot mauka of Honoapi‘ilani Highway near Dickenson Street.

Callers first reported it as a brush fire at 11:52 p.m. Sunday night, Feb. 19, but when firefighters arrived, they found a 30 -by-30-foot area of trash and household appliances burning.

The fire was extinguished at 12:44 a.m. Monday.

The vacant lot is a frequented hotspot for homeless encampments and trash dumping. The fire appeared to have started at an old campsite.

There were no injuries and no homes were threatened.

The cause of the fire was undetermined.

At 4:50 p.m.,  firefighters responded to multiple reports of a brush fire near the Lahainaluna High School.

Lahaina fire crews arrived at 5:05 p.m. to find a 300-foot-long area of grass on fire just above the high school. A water tanker from Lahaina, and an engine company from Napili helped to bring the fire under control at 5:40 p.m. and extinguished at 6:12 p.m.

A West Maui battalion chief also responded.

About a half-acre of grass burned between the high school and the Lahaina Water Treatment Facility above the school.

There were no injuries and no structures were threatened.

The cause of the fire was undetermined.
