MAPA Seeking Young Performers for Summer Musical Theatre Camp
The Maui Academy of Performing Arts is looking for young performers, ages eight to 18, to take part in their Summer Musical Theatre Camp.
Kids and young adults can spend the summer singing, dancing and acting, which will end with eight public performances of Disney’s Mulan Jr. where all students will perform in the show.
The camp offers more than 175 hours of training under the expert direction of professional teaching artists and delivers the highest quality performing arts experiences educationally and artistically.
MAPA was founded 1974 and has been the longest running performing arts camp on Maui.
MAPA believes that regular participation in the arts is essential to the development of young people, the camp delivers a rigorous and fun curriculum including:
Acting – physical portrayal of character; vocal expression; emotional commitment and expression
Dance – body control; strength and flexibility; counting and rhythm; abstract and literal expression; spatial awareness
Singing – breath support and projection; pitch; articulation
Professionalism – theatre etiquette; stage directions and annotations; memorization; timing
Collaboration – respect; trust of self and others; dependability; flexibility
Personal Skills – empathy, focus, creative problem-solving, confidence
The camp runs from June 12 to July 20, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the MAPA Main studios at 2027 Main Street in Wailuku. Performances run from July 21–23, and from July 28–30, in the new state-of-the art ‘A’ali’ikuhonua Creative Arts Center at Seabury Hall in Makawao.
Tuition for the camp is $895, which is $5 per hour for 175 hours of training, and a generous needs-based scholarship program is available.
