Maui Capital Improvement Projects Targeted for $382 M

Maui representatives secured about $382 million in Capital Improvement Project funding for various projects across Maui County, including funds for Maui County schools, airports and harbors.

The state budget passed by the House last week included $126.5 million for improvements at Kahului Airport and $63 million for construction of the new Kīhei High School; and another $18.3 million allocated for the Lahaina Boat Harbor ferry pier.

The budget also includes a total of nearly $1.9 billion for FY2018 and $926 million for FY2019 for capital improvement projects throughout the state.

The numbers do not reflect numerous statewide projects which include projects in all counties.

Highlights of the CIP funding secured for Maui County include the following:

GENERAL

$18.3 million for a ferry pier at Lahaina Boat Harbor
$16 million for Hawaiian Home Lands Phase 2 (76 lots) at Kēōkea-Waiohuli
$10 million for Upcountry Maui Agricultural Park
$9 million for floor damage reconstruction at ʻĪao Valley State Monument
$7.8 million for Kāʻanapali Beach restoration and berm enhancement
$3.7 million for an education center and forest management on Kahoʻolawe Island
$2 million for Hawaiian Home Lands water system at Kēōkea and Maui Aka
$1.5 million for Hawaii Home Lands development of Hoʻolehua (Molokai)
$1.4 for Hawaiian Home Lands highway improvements at Leialiʻi
$1.2 million for Hawaiian Home Lands for road safety and drainage at Kula
$1 million for Hawaiian Home Lands repair and preservation at Kēōkea-Waiohuli
$1 million for dredging Kīhei Boat Harbor

SCHOOLS

· $63 million for the new Kīhei High School
· $12.3 million for Waihee Elementary School for an administration building
· $3 million for Kula Elementary School trailer office and classroom and storage units
· $2.5 million for Pukalani Elementary School renovations of existing structures and new facilities
· $2 million for Kalama Intermediate School expansion of the music band room
· $2 million for Maui College exterior repairs, gutter redesign, and renovations
· $1.4 million for Lanai High and Elementary School for building renovations
· $1.35 million for King Kekaulike High School batting cage and storage
· $1.2 million for Makawao Elementary School covered walkways
· $800,000 for Maui Waena Intermediate School air conditioning for heat abatement
· $700,000 for Kahului Elementary School air conditioning for heat abatement
· $500,000 for Haʻikū Elementary School roof replacement and other work
· $230,000 for Kualapuʻu Elementary School (Molokaʻi) roof replacement and improvements

TRANSPORTATION

· $126.5 million for Kahului Airport improvements to terminal, security, and holdroom
· $40 million for Lahaina Bypass Road land acquisition and construction
· 10.1 million for guardrail, shoulder, drainage, pedestrian and operational improvements to state highways

· $7.2 million for Hāna Highway bridge and roadway improvements
· $4.5 million for Kalaupapa Airport rescue and fire fighting garage, terminal renovation and lighting

· $3.7 million for Hāna Pier superstructure improvements
· $3.7 million for Pāʻia Bypass traffic improvements
· $3.2 million for Puʻunēnē Avenue improvements
· $3 million for Lānaʻi Airport baseyard and restroom renovations
· $2 million for Haleakalā Highway widening
· $2 million for Hāna Airport baseyard renovation and other improvements
· $2 million for Kapalua Airport water tank improvements
· $1.6 million for Molokaʻi Airport terminal and utility improvements
