Maui Schools Launch Phone Book Recycling Drive

Vivial, the publisher of the Hawaiian Telcom Directory, is partnering with schools on the neighbor islands of Hawaiʻi, Kauaʻi, Lānaʻi, Maui and Molokaʻi to launch the an old phone book recycling drive and environmental awareness campaign.

The #SmallBizBigOutcome campaign runs through May 30th and is being held in conjunction with the 2017 Hawaiian Telcom Directory delivery on the neighbor islands.

Local schools on each island will compete to collect the outdated telephone directories, which will keep the directories out of landfills through recycling.

All participating schools will receive a cash prize for their involvement in the program, and one school will win a grand prize.

The grand prize winner will be selected based on book collection totals and efforts to engage and educate students about recycling and protecting the local environment.

“Vivial cares about small businesses and residents in the communities we serve and our #SmallBizBigOutcome campaign champions those who are working to create positive change,” said John Lambert, branch manager of Vivial in Hawaiʻi. “We love seeing how students of all ages get involved and learn the difference they can make in protecting the local environment through recycling.”

Hawaiian Telcom Directories are 100% recyclable. After the close of the contest, the telephone directories are shipped off-island for recycling. On Hawaiʻi, Kauaʻi, Lānaʻi and Maui the materials are converted into an array of new products, including building insulation, writing and copier papers, newsprint and paper towels. The directories from Molokaʻi are processed at a waste-to-energy facility where they are used to generate a valuable source of renewable energy for Oʻahu.

Vivial is also partnering with local food banks, including Hawaiʻi Foodbank, Hawaiʻi Foodbank – Kauaʻi Branch, The Food Basket and the Maui Foodbank, to host a community food drive. By using the recyclable directory delivery bags, Vivial encourages the community to fill the bags with nonperishable food items and donate them to local food banks.

Participating Maui schools include: Lānaʻi High and Elementary School; Kaunakakai Elementary School; Kualapuʻu School; Maunaloa School; HP Baldwin High School; Haʻikū Elementary School; Kalama Intermediate School; Kula Elementary School; Maui High School; Pōmaikaʻi Elementary School; Puʻu Kukui Elementary School; and Wailuku Elementary School.
