Woman Falls from 40-Foot Peʻahi Cliff

A 24-year-old woman was airlifted on Friday afternoon, after falling from a steep 40-foot cliff overlooking the famed surf break of Peʻahi, also known as “Jaws.”

Maui firefighters responded to the incident at around 12:39 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2017.

Crews aboard the fire department’s Air-1 helicopter located the .woman at the bottom of a steep slope just below the lookout area.

Rescue personnel secured the woman into a stretcher basket and airlifted her to a landing zone set up at nearby Valley Isle Memorial Park in Haʻikū

At 1:30 p.m. the woman was transferred to paramedics who treated and transported her to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

Maui fire officials say the woman was from New York City, but is living on Maui short-term in Wailuku.

According to department reports, the woman was walking down a trail that leads to the shoreline when she lost her footing.  She fell about 20-feet down a steep incline along the 40-foot cliff. The victim was walking with another female when the accident happened.

Pāʻia firefighters and a rescue crew from Kahului responded to the incident.
