No Tsunami Threat to Hawaiʻi After Large Chile Earthquake

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi after a 7.1 (preliminary magnitude 6.7) earthquake reported at 11:38 a.m. HST on Monday, April 24, 2017 off the coast of Central Chile, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The PTWC states that based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-Wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.
According to the USGS, the quake was located:
- 24 miles West of Valparaíso, Chile (Population: 282,448)
- 28 miles West of Viña del Mar, Chile (Population: 294,551)
- 34 miles West of Quilpué, Chile (Population: 130,263)
- 38 miles West of Villa Alemana, Chile (Population: 97,320)
- 42 miles NW of Cartagena, Chile (Population: 16,875)
