California Man Medevaced from Nāpili Bay in Near-Drowning

Maui medevac.

A California visitor was medevaced to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious condition after a near-drowning incident at Nāpili Bay in West Maui on Sunday, May 7, 2017.

Officials say firefighters responded to a report of a man pulled from the water at the location at around 10:18 a.m.

Firefighters from Nāpili were on scene at 10:27 a.m. and found an adult male on the beach, conscious and breathing.

Paramedics treated the man, then transported him to Nāpili Park where he was loaded onto a medevac helicopter and transferred to the hospital for further care.

Maui Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto said the man, an 81-year-old California visitor, was snorkeling with a family member when he was found face-down and unresponsive in the water.

Bystanders pulled him to shore and performed CPR. Authorities say the man quickly regained consciousness and began breathing on his own.
