2017 Maui SUP Cup Features Two Downwind Races in July

Organizers of the Maui2Molokai are tying the event together this year with the Poi Bowl SUP Race for the 2017 Maui SUP Cup with a total prize purse of $12,000.

Maui2Molokai: July 15, 2017

The 27-mile open ocean Maui2Molokai downwind race across the Pailolo and Kalohi Channels challenges an international crowd of elite paddlers each year.  This year’s event takes place on July 15, 2017, beginning at Honolua Bay on Maui and running across to Kaunakakai Harbor on Molokaʻi.

In the past, the Maui2Molokai was followed by the Maui Paddleboard Championships, one of the longest standing races in the SUPs young history.  Due to several challenges the race was not held consistently in the past. Now the organizers of the Maui2Molokai are bringing this popular race back, taking place on the legendary Maliko Run from Maliko Gulch to Kahului Harbor.

M2M Race Director Rodney Kilborn said, “We are excited to bring back the Poi Bowl SUP Race on July 23, 2017 tying it in with the Maui2Molokai calling it the Maui SUP Cup.”

“We are also very excited to announce the co-operation with the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority,” said Marketing Director and long time paddler Mike Jucker.

With the help of local sponsors and the State of Hawaiʻi organizers were able to announce at total price purse of $12,000 for both races combined. “For us this is a mile stone,” sais Jucker,” I have been professionally involved in the sport for over seven years seeing how hard it is for these athletes to make a living. This is why I am particularly happy to give these athletes an opportunity to make a decent pay check at our races.”
