This article is the third in a new series of golf tips written by David Gerken, the PGA head golf professional at Kahili Golf Course.

Gerken provides tips on how to get your ball out of the bunker by comparing the “fried egg” on a loco moco as a bad “fried egg.”

In order to get the ball out of the lie you need to get your club to dig in the sand. When the clubface is open (pointing to the right of the target), the club will glide easily through the top layer of sand.

In order to get the club to “dig” into the sand and get the ball out of the “Fried Egg” lie, slightly close the clubface. You must close the face and get the leading edge on the sand, as the club moves forward it digs down in the sand.

Set up the ball a little in the back of my stance, with the clubface slightly closed, swing and leave the club in the sand projecting the ball up on the green.

Swing with a lot of speed down into the sand.
