An early morning traffic accident in Central Maui downed a utility pole and knocked out electricity to an estimated 430 customers in Kahului on Saturday morning, July 1, 2017.  The accident was reported at around 3:30 a.m. just past Whole Foods at the Hāna Highway/East Kaʻahumanu section of road near the end of the Maui Mall complex.

In a separate outage in West Maui, an estimated 2,260 customers lost power at around 7:40 a.m. in the Nāpili and Kapalua area. All customers had power restored by 10:12 a.m.  The cause of the outage is under investigation.

The Kahului accident also resulted in a road closure of the Hāna Highway between East Kamehameha Avenue and East Kaʻahumanu, and East Kaʻahumanu Avenue between Hobron Avenue and Wharf Street.  The outage occurred at around 3:30 a.m., but road closure notice was issued about an hour later at around 4:30 a.m.  The road remained closed for about 13 hours, reopening at 5:45 p.m.

Power was restored to a majority of customers in Kahului by 5 a.m.
