A fire in Kapalua on Friday morning, July 14, 2017, was confined to a garage that was under construction in the Mahana Estates development.

The incident was reported shortly after 6 a.m. and was contained within about 15 minutes.

Fire investigators say the cause was believed to have been the self-ignition of rags containing wood finishing products.

The fire spread from those rags to other contents of the garage, causing an estimated $30,000 in damage to the structure, and $20,000 in damage to its contents.
