Near-Drowning at Mākena Landing

Emergency crews in South Maui responded at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, to an unresponsive female pulled from the water at Mākena Landing in Mākena.

Wailea firefighters arrived at 12:41 p.m. and found the female victim on the beach breathing on her own, tended by bystanders.

Paramedics arrived and treated the woman before transporting her to Maui Memorial Medical Center
in stable condition.

The victim, a 57-year-old woman visiting from Fremont, California had been snorkeling in the area and was found by a family member floating face down and unresponsive.

The family member brought the woman to shore where a nurse and a firefighter here on vacation administered immediate CPR.

After less than a minute of CPR, the woman regained a pulse and began breathing on her own.
