Maui and Moloka‘i FLOOD WARNING Until 9:45 p.m.

Update: 9:45 p.m. 4.2.18

Weather radar showed that the heavy rain has ended and stream gauges indicate that stream levels are receding. Therefore the Flash Flood Warning for Maui and Molokaʻi will expire at 9:45 PM HST.  The flood advisory for the island of Lānaʻi has also been canceled.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood WARNING for the islands of Maui and Molokaʻi until 9:45 PM HST.  There is also a Flood Advisory in effect for the island of Lānaʻi.

At 8:14 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain across the west Maui with rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per  hour. Law enforcement also reported flooding and vehicles stuck on the lower Honoapiʻilani Road in Nāpili with 10 inches or more of water over the roadway.

At 6:38 p.m. HST, radar indicated heavy rain over west Maui. Rain was falling at a rate of around 1 inch per hour, with a large area of heavy rainfall approaching from the west. Several more hours of heavy rainfall with rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour can be expected. Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly. Locations in the warning include but are not limited to Kahului, Kapalua, Honokohau, Kahakuloa, Puʻunēnē, Waikapū, Lahaina, Wailuku, Waiehu, Māʻalaea, Waiheʻe and Kāʻanapali.

At 6:37 p.m. HST, local law enforcement reported flooding on Kamehameha 5 Highway near Mile Marker 4. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour over eastern Molokaʻi. Flash flooding is already occurring. Locations in the warning include the entire island of Molokaʻi.

The National Weather Service has ISSUED a FLOOD ADVISORY for Lānaʻi in effect until 10 p.m.  At 6:58 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain near Lānaʻi Airport.  Rain was falling at a rate of one-half to one inch per hour. Locations in this advisory include but are not limited to: Lānaʻi City and Mānele.

The National Weather Service has ISSUED a FLOOD ADVISORY for MOLOKAI in effect until 9:15 p.m. This advisory may need to be extended if heavy rain persists. A FLOOD ADVISORY also remains in effect for MAUI until 7:45 p.m.

At 6:12 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain near Hoolehua. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Minor flooding of low lying and poor drainage areas can be expected. Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to the entire island of Molokai.

The National Weather Service has ISSUED a FLOOD ADVISORY for MAUI ISLAND in effect until 7:45 p.m. A Flood Advisory means that nuisance flooding is occurring or imminent. A Flood Advisory may be upgraded to a Flash Flood Warning if flooding worsens and poses a threat to life and property. This advisory may need to be extended if heavy rain persists.

At 4:51 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain near Kapalua. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour across many areas of west Maui. Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Kapalua, Honokohau, Kahakuloa, Waihee, Kaanapali, Lahaina, Wailuku, Napili-Honokowai, Waiehu, Olowalu and Waikapu.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: STAY AWAY FROM STREAMS, DRAINAGE DITCHES AND LOW LYING AREAS PRONE TO FLOODING. RAINFALL AND RUNOFF WILL ALSO CAUSE HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS DUE TO PONDING, REDUCED VISIBILITY AND POOR BREAKING ACTION. DO NOT CROSS FAST FLOWING OR RISING WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE OR ON FOOT. TURN AROUND…DON’T DROWN.
