Proposed Maui Solar-Plus-Storage Project Meeting

AES will host a community meeting on Thursday, Nov. 15, to share information and gather community feedback on a proposed solar-plus-storage project near Waikapū, Maui.

The proposed project is one of seven such projects announced by the Hawaiian Electric Companies intended to help Hawaiʻi achieve its goal of generating 100% of its energy from renewable sources by 2045.

AES Distributed Energy was awarded the solar-plus-storage project on the island of Maui in central Maui just east of Kuihelani Highway near Waikapū. The project will include 60 MW of solar PV plus 240 MWh of battery energy storage providing Maui Electric with renewable dispatchable generation for 25 years.

As an initial step in the process, AES Distributed Energy will host an upcoming community meeting to describe the proposed project in Maui in further detail.  The public and interested key stakeholders are invited to attend and provide any comments to the following email address: [email protected]. The deadline for public comment is Dec. 15, 2018.

The community meeting will be held on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Pōmaikaʻi Elementary School, located at 4650 South Kamehameha Avenue in Kahului.

With a presence in Hawai‘i for more than 25 years, representatives with AES say the company shares the state’s commitment to a greener energy future.

In early 2018, AES Distributed Energy, a subsidiary of The AES Corporation, broke ground on one of the world’s largest solar-plus-storage projects on the island of Kaua‘i. The innovative 28 MW solar and 100 MWh battery energy storage system is on track to be completed on schedule by the end of 2018.
