A Maui firefighter suffered hand lacerations while responding to a structure fire in Honokōhau Valley on Tuesday afternoon.

The firefighter was treated and released from the Maui Memorial Medical Center last night.

The fire also caused an estimated $5,000 in damage according to department reports.

The incident was reported at 5:34 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018.

Crews arrived on scene to find a makeshift structure fully involved by fire along with a 60 ft x 40 ft area of loosely piled items also on fire.

Firefighters worked to quickly knock down flames and contain the fire, but because of the arrangement and large amount of loose items involved in the fire, crews declared the fire officially extinguished at 9:42 p.m.

Fire engines from Nāpili, and Lahaina responded to the incident along with tankers from Lahaina and Wailea.
