Sentry, one of the largest business-focused mutual insurance companies in the United States, announced details around the company’s 2019 charity work in conjunction with the Sentry Tournament of Champions Jan. 3-6, 2019 at the Kapalua Resort on Maui.

Sentry announced it will donate $25,000 to Maui United Way, an organization helping to address Maui’s most vital needs through the impact areas of Education, Income (sustainability) and Health. Through this donation and future work, Sentry is extending its support of United Way chapters in communities across the country that the company is a part of.

Sentry also announced it is starting a scholarship program for Maui public high school students—up to a dozen per year—to attend the University of Hawaiʻi and its affiliated Hawaiʻi Community Colleges. Two $2500 annual scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree, and two $1000 annual scholarships will be awarded to two students pursuing an associate degree. The scholarships are renewable provided students continue to meet eligibility criteria. The program is modeled after Sentry scholarships long-established in the company’s home state of Wisconsin. Both are designed to promote local workforce development. Sentry will announce the names of the scholarship winners in the spring.

Additionally, proceeds of the 2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions will go to a number of designated nonprofit organizations throughout Maui. Some of 2018’s recipients included Boy Scouts of America Maui County Council, Friends of the Children’s Justice Center and the Hale Makua Health Services. Beneficiaries of money raised during the 2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions will be announced and awarded in the spring as well.

Sentry is actively involved in philanthropy, especially workforce development, in communities where its more than 4,300 associates live and work. Since becoming title sponsor of the Sentry Tournament of Champions, that now includes Maui County.

“Our role as title sponsor of the Sentry Tournament of Champions includes being a part of the Maui community. We’ve been having conversations about how to best do that and have chosen to invest in Maui’s residents the way we do wherever we have a strong physical presence, from our home office in Wisconsin to every community we’re a part of. Yes, all the way to Maui,” said Pete McPartland, Sentry chairman of the board, president, and CEO. “We look at our work on Maui as a yearlong commitment, not just part of a one-week event. We’re proud to extend our commitment to work with partners like United Way and support Maui students as they pursue a higher education and give back to the community.”
