Inouye Posthumously Honored with “Spirit of the Warrior” Award

The US Army Pacific honored US Senator Daniel K. Inouye posthumously with the command’s highest civilian award.

The Mana O Ke Koa or Spirit of the Warrior award is issued annually to a distinguished individual who demonstrates steadfast support of soldiers, their families, and the Army community, authorities said.

Jennifer Sabas, who served as the former chief of staff to the late senator, accepted the award on behalf of the Inouye family during a ceremony this week on Oʻahu.

According to the announcement, the Pacific Command recognized Inouye’s contributions that included service as an Army officer in World War II with the famed 100th Battalion 442nd Infantry Regiment.

Inouye’s service in the US Senate included rank as president pro tempore, which put him third in line for presidential succession.

Inouye was also credited for his work as Chair of the US Senate Committee on Appropriations in which he backed funding for many military initiatives.

Since the award was established in 2007, officials say past recipients have included: William “Bill” Paty; former governor Linda Lingle; P. Pasha Baker; Carole Kai; Ken Bailey; and Albert Silva.
