Double-Decker Bus Begins Service to Kīhei

The County of Maui launches service aboard its new double-decker bus this weekend.

The bus will be used to service customers between Central and South Maui on the Kīhei Island Route beginning with a 6:30 a.m. departure on Saturday, July 6.

The route was selected because of the high volume of residents and visitors who travel between the two locations daily.

Transportation officials say the bus has double the capacity of an average bus, and can carry an estimated 90 passengers.

In an announcement today, county officials said the vehicle was purchased used, for $378,362.

According to information released in December 2012, ridership on the Maui Bus had already exceeded 2.7 million passenger boardings per year, with officials calling it “the fastest growing public transit system in the nation.”

In response to the community, routes were expanded to include the Kula area late last year.

The fare aboard the new double-decker bus will remain the same as it is for other Maui Bus vehicles: $2 per single boarding or $4 for an all-day pass.
