A fire came within inches of a cottage near mile marker 10 of the Hāna Highway (Hwy 36) in Haʻikū on Saturday afternoon before being brought under control, fire officials said.
The fire was reported at 4:16 on Saturday, July 20, 2013, and was extinguished at 6:02 p.m., according to incident reports.
Fire officials say the fire burned a half-acre of brush on the mauka side of the highway with units from an engine company in Pāʻia and a tanker from Kahului responding to the scene.
Authorities say no injuries were reported and the cottage sustained no damages.
Traffic remained open while crews battled the blaze.
Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said the cause was undetermined after investigation.
