Pedestrian Struck by Motorcycle in West Maui Critically Injured

A 28-year-old Lahaina woman was listed in “extremely critical” condition after being struck by a motorcycle while trying to cross the Honoapiʻilani Highway on foot in West Maui on Thursday morning, Aug. 15, police said.
According to police reports, the woman was crossing the highway from west to east, in the mauka bound direction, when she was struck by a motorcyclist headed south-bound on the Honoapiʻilani Highway. Police say the woman was not in a marked crosswalk at the time.
The incident was reported at 1:46 a.m. near the Hoʻohui Road intersection in the Kahana area of West Maui. The road was closed in the area from 5 a.m. to 8:05 a.m. while police conducted an investigation.
Maui police say alcohol and speed is suspected but is still under investigation, according to a report filed by Sergeant William Hankins with the Maui Police Department Vehicle Homicide Section.
The 46-year-old Lahaina man who was driving the 2006 Kawasaki ZX 14 black motorcycle involved in the crash sustained a fractured right arm and was also transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
The pedestrian’s injuries are considered life-threatening.

ROAD OPEN: Maui police have reopened the Honoapiʻilani Hwy (30) at 8:05 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15. The road was closed between Akahele St near the Kapalua Airport to Nāpilihau Rd near the Nāpili Plaza at 5 a.m. due to a critical motorcycle accident.
