A portion of South Kīhei Road will be closed for nearly 12 hours today as county crews conduct emergency roadway stabilization work at the Waiakoa Culvert.

The roadwork runs from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the portion of South Kīhei Road fronting the Old Suda Store.

Work involves the installation of ¾-inch steel plates over the culvert to relieve stress on the deteriorating structure.

During the closure, motorists will not be able to access South Kīhei Road from the north (or Old Suda Store location); but instead, will be routed onto Piʻilani Highway. Motorists approaching from the south will be detoured onto Uwapo Road.

The steel plate mitigation comes two weeks after a separate emergency culvert repair project was conducted on a portion of the road further to the south at the Kūlanihākoʻi Bridge.
