Best Chance to Take in Some Hula

Hālau winners from Japan compete in solo and group performances with hālau from Hawai‘i, Washington and California in a full afternoon of performances.
The show starts at 1 p.m. and the MACC noted that the competition includes adult male and female categories as well as solo performances in kahiko (traditional) and ‘auana (modern) hula.
To date, there are 34 performances planned, with group and solo performances from eight different hālau. The judges for the competition will be Leimomi Ho, Maka Herrod and Dr. Taupōuri Tangarō.
Saturday’s Kū Mai Ka Hula is presented by Maui Arts & Cultural Center in association with Kauahea Inc., a non-profit organization founded by Hōkūlani Holt to support Hawaiian arts and culture.

Best Way to Learn a Traditional Hawaiian Skill
Not into watching so much as doing?
The early Hawaiians extracted dyes from a number of native plants to dye tapa cloth. ‘Uki’uki was one of those berries.
This Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m., you can learn how to use it by attending a workshop at Hali’imaile Community Garden.
Make a dye from fresh ‘uki’uki berries and then use it to make wall decorations by dying cloth, and using stamps, paint brushes and black paint to creating your own art pieces.
Registration is required and attendees are asked to bring bring cheese cloth and a plastic bowl to smash the berries. Black paint, stamps, and muslin cloth would also be helpful.
