A 56-year-old man was airlifted from ʻĪao Valley after injuring his shoulder in a fall while hiking over the weekend, officials said.
The incident was reported at 10:44 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22, about 20 minutes into the trail.
Firefighters from Wailuku and Kahului responded to the scene, along with the department’s Air-1 helicopter.
Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said the man was in extreme pain and unable to walk out on his own.
The patient was transported to the parking lot via helicopter and then taken by ambulance to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious condition, according to FS Chief Mainaga.
Officials said the man was hiking with a group of friends, but it is unknown if he was a visitor or resident.
