Threat of Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain on Maui

Light thunderstorms were visible over parts of Central Maui early Thursday morning with the threat of additional thunderstorms and heavy rain possible through Friday morning.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for Maui County until 6 a.m. on Friday as a cold low moving over the eastern half of the state increases the threat of inclement weather.

NWS forecasters say, “Widespread showers and possible thunderstorms will produce locally heavy rainfall through Thursday night. While the bulk of the rainfall will occur over windward slopes, heavy showers will be possible over leeward areas during this afternoon.”

The watch forecast also states that, “Intense rainfall over nearby slopes may produce flooding in area streams, canyons and other low-lying areas.

As a precaution, the public is reminded that rainfall and runoff can cause hazardous driving conditions including ponding, reduced visibility, and poor braking action.

Motorists and pedestrians are reminded not to cross fast flowing or rising water in their vehicle or on foot.
