BREAKING: 3 Dead, 2 Critical, 1 Serious Injury in Lānaʻi Plane Crash

A plane crash on Lānaʻi has claimed the lives of three individuals, including the pilot of a small plane, Maui Now has learned.

Three other individuals, two of them in critical condition and one in serious, were being taken by medics to the Lānaʻi Airport for transport to area hospitals, according to Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

We have since learned that all survivors are being transported to Queens Medical Center on Oʻahu for treatment.

The incident was reported at 9:23 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014 in the Miki Basin area of the island, about a mile southwest from the Lānaʻi Airport, said Chief Mainaga.

According to initial reports, emergency crews made access the site from the SW side of the runway along Miki Road.

At around 10:08 p.m., fire crews had accessed the plane crash site and were working to extinguishing a fire on scene.

There is an unofficial count of three individuals deceased (two inside the plane and one outside); and two individuals in critical condition outside the plane, with one individual standing and walking.

There are no details yet on what type of plane is involved, the extent of damage, or the intended flight plan.
