Infant Injured in Custody Struggle, Parents Arrested

Maui police arrested the parents of an infant girl after the child was treated for an injury that police say was sustained in a custody struggle.
According to police, Kayzia-Ashley Washington, 21, of Kahului and her boyfriend, Dane Nakama, 20, were allegedly involved in an argument that escalated into a struggle.
Police were notified by medical personnel on Thursday, March 20, 2014, of a suspicious injury to the infant after she was brought in by her mother to a clinic for treatment.
Police say the the child, who was being held by her mother at the time of the argument, sustained the injury as a result of the struggle, but did not specify the extent of injuries.
Both Nakama and Washington were arrested and charged with second-degree assault, physical abuse of a family and household member, and endangering the welfare of a minor, according to police reports.
Police say bail for Nakama was set at $12,000, and bail for Washington was set at $3,000.
