Free Health Screening Series Kicks Off This Weekend

A series of nine free health screenings is being offered on Maui this month as part of a co-sponsorship between the Oʻahu-based nonprofits Project Vision Hawaiʻi and WE…A Hui for Health.

The sessions kick off with participation in this weekend’s Hāna Health Fair in East Maui.

Organizers say health screenings may include: vision testing; blood-pressure screening; Community Alliance for Mental Health counseling for issues, such as depression and Post Traumatic Stess Disorder; one-on-one education on diabetes screening; assistance from the Hepatitus Support Network; Legacy of Life Hawai‘i organ and tissue donor information; National Kidney Foundation information; women’s health assistance; and Medicare anti-fraud, and anti-scam educational material.

Each session will take up to an hour with all sites offering limited supplies of tote bags and free reading glasses from the ʻOhana Health Plan; and free haircuts at selected events (on April 14, 17, and 27).

A complete list of screening events will be held at the following times and locations:

  • Saturday, April 12: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hāna Health Fair;
  • Sunday, April 13: 9:30 a.m. to noon at St. Rita’s Church, 655 Haʻikū Road;
  • Monday, April 14: 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Paukūkalo Boys & Girls Club;
  • Thursday, April 17: 9 a.m. to noon at the Salvation Army in Lahaina on Shaw Street;
  • Thursday, April 17: 2 to 6 p.m. at Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Center, Westside location on Ipu ‘Aumakua Lane in Lahaina;
  • Saturday, April 19: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Harbor Lights Condominium and Kahului Swap Meet, located on Kahului Beach Road;
  • Friday, April 25: 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Hale Kau Kau at St. Theresa Church on Līpoa Street in Kīhei;
  • Saturday, April 26: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Da Kidney Da Kine Day at the Queen Kaʻahumanu Center; and
  • Sunday, April 27: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Living Way Church parking lot located on North Market Street in Happy Valley.

This is the third consecutive year that the free screenings are being offered on Maui.

Organizers say the youth-oriented health screenings on April 14 at the Paukūkalo Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui will require parents to sign release forms for participating keiki.
