Kula Community Association to Discuss Sustainability, Elect Officers

The Kula Community Association will discuss sustainability and hold elections for new board members and officers at its upcoming meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. with pūpū followed by the program, which is set to start at 7 p.m. at the Kula Community Center.

Organizers will discuss the “Aloha+ Challenge”, an initiative in which county and state leaders have agreed to a goal of becoming 70% self-sustainable by 2030.

The challenge sets clear targets in six areas to reach by 2030–among them, the establishment of 70% clean energy from renewables and efficiency, as well as doubling local food production.

“As our contribution toward this challenge Upcountry residents can learn about the potential for Upcountry Maui to become much more self-sustainable,” organizers said in an event announcement.

Speakers include:

• Audrey Newman Senior Advisor for Hawaiʻi Green Growth who will describe the framework of the initiative;
• Maui County environmental coordinator Rob Parsons;
• Bill Greenleaf, president of Maui Farmers’ Union; and
• Dr. Jennifer Chirico, former director of UH Maui College’s Sustainable Living Institute of Maui and president of SustyPacific.
