8 Join Maui Police Department in 80th Recruit Graduation

Members of the Maui Police Department’s 80th Recruit class graduated today in a ceremony at the Maui Beach Hotel in Kahului.

The recruits went through eight months of physical and academic reqirements as part of their training.

The eight newly sworn-in members will now be assigned to the Field Training Officer Program in the coming months.

The Maui police department’s newest members include: Bethany Cravalho; Shaun Shiraki; Manual Sorcy; Devin Schoeppner; Matthew Naeole; Kawika Ornellas; Dumitru Vandici; and Jacob Kartchner.

The department’s Outstanding Recruit Award went to Officer Manuel Sorcy for presenting the most consistent achievement in the areas of training, leadership, judgement, attitude and service to others.

Other awards included the following:

  • Scholastic Achievement Award – Officer Kawika Ornellas: Presented to the most astute recruit for achieving and maintaining the highest academic grade point average. This included study in criminal law, first responder training, CPR, and motor vehicle accident investigations.
  • Neil T. Endo Firearms Award – Officer Jacob Kartchner: The award was presented to the most accurate marksman, achieving the highest score during firearms training to include the final written exam, physical shot gun, and a rifle course.
  • M. Cecil “Rusty” Dickson Award for Physical Fitness – Officer Kawika Ornellas: The award went to the most physically fit recruit, demonstrating overall superiority in arrest, defense and tactics as well as physical training.
  • Best Notebook Award – Officer Bethany Cravalho: For content, organization and completeness and neatness.

This is the latest recruit class to graduate since 21 individuals joined the department in May.
