Road Projects to Begin in Lāhainā and Wailuku on Feb. 1

Maui County’s Highway Division will be sealing roadways in two Maui locations next week in an effort to preserve roadways.

Sealing of Wailuku Heights roadways will begin on Monday, Feb. 2, 2015, beginning with the south end of South Alu’s cul-de-sac and moving north.  Sealing will also be applied to Lāhainā roadways throughout February, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Leiali‘i Subdivision and on Kaniau Road, from Malo Street to Ku‘uipo Street.

Area residents affected by the project will be alerted two days prior to the construction with door hangers. The county is advising that residents park outside of work zones and roadways, and avoid newly sealed segments of the road to allow proper drying time. Residents are also advised to keep all irrigation systems turned off while crews are working in the vicinity.

Motorists should expect delays and drive cautiously in construction areas for the safety of road crews.  Some driveways will be inaccessible during the project as the sealant generally takes 4 to 6 hours to dry. Alternative walkways will be provided in designated areas. The road work will occur weekdays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The preservation project is designed to extend the life of roadways while providing safe thoroughfares and saving taxpayer money. The seals are applied on the surface of asphalt to protect it from oxidation and wear caused by the elements and chemicals like oil and gasoline.
