The MACC to Present ‘Pavement’ Dance Performance on Feb. 28

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center will be presenting the provocative new dance work “Pavement” on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Castle Theater. The performance features the dance company Abraham.In.Motion, and was created by dancer-choreographer Kyle Abraham.

Set in urban black neighborhoods where violence runs rampant, “Pavement” is imbued with aggression, swagger, vulnerability and love. The performance examines life in the ghetto, and the emotionally-charged evolution of a culture entangled in conflict, discrimination and the relentless quest for “lottery ticket” freedom.

Kyle Abraham, founder of Abraham.In.Motion, serves as the artistic director. He has won prestigious performance awards and was called the “best and brightest creative talent to emerge” in recent times by OUT Magazine.

His work weaves movement with raw language, emphasizing sound, human behavior and visual forms.

Commenting on his work, Abraham said, “In 1991, I was 14 and entering the ninth grade… That same year, John Singleton’s film, ‘Boyz N The Hood,’ was released. For me, the film depicted an idealized ‘gangsta bohéme,’ laying aim to the state of the black American male at the end of the 20th century. Twenty years later and more than 10 years into the 21st century, I am focused on investigating the state of Black America and a history therein.”
