Mākena State Park Reopens, All Clear Issued by EOD Team

The Puʻuōlaʻi (Little Beach) area of Mākena Beach State Park was reopened at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 18 by the DLNR Division of State Parks following an all clear issued by a US Army Explosive Ordnance Detail team.

The crew was called to investigate the discovery of remnants of a detonation wire on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015.

The EOD determined that the item was a shock cord remnant from a rockfall mitigation project conducted in the 1990’s and was non-explosive.

Authorities said the cord was “spent,” non-threatening, and there was no public danger.

“Thanks to the military personnel who provided air transport and EOD support to State Parks. We thank the beach and ocean goers for their understanding,” said Clarence Yamamoto, Maui DOCARE branch chief in a statement.
