No Tsunami Threat Following 6.2 Mexico Earthquake

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi following a 6.2 (preliminary magnitude 6.6) earthquake off the coast of Jalisco, Mexico, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The quake was reported at 4:23 a.m. HST on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015.

The quake was located: 131 miles SW of Tomatlan, Mexico; 150 miles WSW of Cihuatlan, Mexico; 164 miles W of Manzanillo, Mexico; 166 miles SW of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; and 504 miles W of Mexico City, Mexico according to the US Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an information statement saying, “based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected, and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.”
