The Maui Arts & Cultural Center will offer a screening of “Symphony of the Soil” along with a question-and-answer session with filmmaker Deborah Koons Garcia on Friday, March 13, in the McCoy Studio Theater beginning at 6:30 p.m.
“Symphony of the Soil” is a compelling look at the possibilities of healthy soil creating healthy plants creating healthy humans living on a healthy planet.
“Unfolding with gentle joy and an unexpected beauty, this ode to the miracle of the Earth’s topmost layer gives us a new-found respect for the ground beneath our feet.”—New York Times
Drawing from cutting-edge science and ancient wisdom, the film is an exploration of soil and its elaborate relationships with water, the atmosphere, plants and animals.
Filmed on four continents, featuring esteemed scientists, working farmers and ranchers, the film examines soil science, our human relationship with soil, and the use and misuse of soil in agriculture, deforestation and development.
Garcia’s first documentary film, “The Future of Food” (2004), was the canary in the coalmine, examining corporate domination of our food supply and the first major film to cover genetic engineering. “Symphony of the Soil,” her second film, has won numerous awards and screened at universities, festivals and venues around the world.
In 2013, Garcia received the John de Graaf Environmental Filmmaking Award.
