Lions Clubs to Host Vision Screening at Maui Drag Races

The Lions clubs of Maui in collaboration with the nonprofit Project Vision Hawaiʻi  will host the inaugural Race for Sight this Saturday, April 18, at the Maui Raceway Park in Puʻunēnē.

For a dozen years, Lions have generated funds by selling chili, hamburger-steak and shoyu-chicken plate lunches at the drags.

This month, they are bringing the Project Vision mobile clinic to the races to provide screening for keiki eye disorders as well as adult eye conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

The Lyons clubs’ efforts to combine community service with fundraising during the event, will run from 4 to 8 p.m.

Project Vision staffers will give free adult reading glasses and free UV keiki sunglasses with variously colored frames to those being tested.

Admission to the drag races where the clinic and fundraising is taking place, is $10 per person.

Lions zone chairwoman Jackie Yamamoto said she would like to see the Race for Sight become an annual event.

The Maui Lions “Race for Vision” event is the last in a three-week Project Vision Hawai’i series of 13 free health-screening events on Maui.

Other upcoming Project Vision events will be from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 16, at Salvation Army Lahaina; 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Center Westside in Lahaina; and 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Ka Hale A Ke Ola Resource Center in Wailuku.
