Informational Meeting on Proposed Maui Wellhead Protection Project
By Maui Now Staff
The Maui County Department of Water Supply host an informational meeting on the proposed Wellhead Protection Overlay District Ordinance this month.
The meeting, which is open to the public, with be held on Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Kaunoa Senior Center in Spreckelsville.
Water Department representatives say the Wellhead Protection Project was initiated to protect the wells that supply drinking water to the community.
Land areas that could contribute water and pollutants to the water supply have been delineated, or mapped as Wellhead Protection Areas.
Water representatives note that if pollutants are spilled or discharged in these areas, they could filter through the soil to the groundwater and be drawn into a drinking water well.
The Department of Water Supply developed a protection strategy with community collaboration that resulted in the Overlay District Ordinance.
More information about wellhead protection can be found online at the Department of Water Supply website under the tabs: “Resources and Planning Division” and “Wellhead Protection.”
