Machado was struck by a multi-purpose vehicle while walking along the Hāna Highway East of the Hoʻokele Street intersection in Kahului on Wednesday afternoon, May 6, 2015.

He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died.

Police say the 21-year-old Wailuku resident who was driving the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe MPV did not suffer any injuries and was wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident.  The vehicle, police say, incurred only minor damages.
