The Maui Police Department issued a total of 2,640 citations, 588 of them for seat belt violations, during the two week “Click It Or Ticket” enforcement campaign that ran from May 11 to 25, 2015.
The recent campaign targeted seat belt, child restraint, and pickup truck restriction violations.
A total of 53 citations were issued for child restraint violations, and eight drivers were cited for pickup truck restrictions.
All other citations were issued for various offenses that included the use of a mobile electronic device while driving, driving without a valid driver’s license, no no fault insurance, speeding, expired tax, expired safety and vehicle equipment violations.
“As we approach the summer vacation season, we want to make sure people are doing the one thing that can save them in a crash, buckling up. The bottom line is that seat belts save lives,” said Lieutenant William Gannon with the Maui Police Department’s Traffic Section.
The fine for a seatbelt violation is $102 on Maui, plus a mandatory court appearance for all child restraint violations.
