MHS 5th Annual Hall of Honor Awardees Named

Tickets are now available for the 5th annual Maui High School Hall of Honor Awards banquet to be held at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 21, 2015 at the Maui Beach Hotel. The banquet is presented by the Maui High School Foundation and recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the school’s legacy and to the Maui community.

The annual banquet also serves as a major fundraiser for the MHS Foundation, which seeks to foster excellence in the school by supporting projects and programs that enhance the educational experience.

This year’s honorees are: Silversword Heritage Award, Wilson P Cannon Jr.’37, President of Bank of Hawaii; Award of Excellence, Shan S Tsutsui ’89, Lt. Governor, State of Hawaiʻi; Spirit of Maui Award, Spencer S. Shiraishi ’45, founder and coach of Maui Swim Club; and Inspiration Award, Odell Marinia, Maui High Track and Field Coach of 36 years.

SILVERSWORD HERITAGE AWARD: WILSON P. CANNON JR. Class of 1937. Never forgetting his Maui roots, he went from Mr. Maui High, 1936-37 to a Bank of Hawaiʻi career of 39 years from teller to President. In the 1970s he started Aloha Friday at Bank of Hawaiʻi and today a nice aloha shirt and slacks are the norm in Hawaiʻi’s business world. He also spent a great part of his life volunteering in the community with organizations like Boy Scouts, United Way, University of Hawaiʻi, and many local and national advisory groups.
AWARD OF EXCELLENCE: SHAN S. TSUTSUI, Class of 1989. The 12th Lieutenant Governor of the State of Hawaiʻi, he was first elected in 2002 from Central Maui to the Hawaiʻi State Senate where he served as Majority Caucus Leader and Senate President. Appointed Lieutenant Governor in December, 2012, he was elected to a four year term in 2014. As a small business owner and financial advisor he served on community boards and coached Wailuku Junior Tennis and Maui High School Tennis.
SPIRIT OF MAUI AWARD: SPENCER S. SHIRAISHI, Class of 1945. Founder and Coach of Maui Swim Club, 1962-2013, “Coach” pioneered Age Group Swimming on Maui, nurturing hundreds of youth of Maui in commitment, teamwork, and intellectual development through swimming; and volunteering his time to community service for more than 60 years. In 2012 he was inducted into the Hawaiʻi Swimming Hall of Fame.
INSPIRATION AWARD: ODELL MARINIA. Coach of Maui High School Track and Field for 36 years, with numerous MIL Girls and Boys Championships and 1995 Hawaiʻi State Boys Championship. His passion inspired his players to achieve their goals on the field and in life. In 2015, he was honored by the Hawaiʻi Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association for his outstanding contributions to school athletics.

The Annual awards banquet brings alumni, faculty, students, family, and friends together to honor Maui High’s legacy while raising funds to foster its future.
