Haʻikū Man Charged in Missing Backhoe Case

A Maui man was arrested and charged in connection with the theft of a backhoe from a sugar cane field in Pāʻia on Monday.

The incident was reported at 7:45 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 14, 2015.

According to police reports, Maui Officers Chad Romero and Eric Grundy investigated the theft of the John Deere backhoe valued at $57,000 from Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Company property.

Police say the machine was stolen from a cane field near the Pāʻia Mill and was equipped with a GPS tracking device.

At about 2 p.m. officers located the stolen backhoe on Puniawa Road in Haʻikū.  Police say Devin Fulcher, 28, of Haʻikū, was allegedly washing the backhoe when officers arrived.

Fulcher was arrested and charged for Unauthorized Control of Propelled Vehicle, and was released on $1,000 bail.
