Event Cleans the Reef, Raises Money for Mooring System

Trilogy Excursions on Maui hosted a reef cleanup over the weekend that drew an estimated 60 volunteers.
The company’s Blue‘Aina Campaign is held annually in conjunction with the International Coastal Cleanup effort.
The event began with a land-based harbor cleanup in Lahiana, before departing to Mala Wharf, where volunteers removed debris from the reef and assisted with water quality sampling a citizen science survey to document coral bleaching.
Due to the strong El Niño weather patterns this year, Hawai’i coral reefs are experiencing extreme bleaching with the onset of warmer water temperatures.

As part of the event, Trilogy donated $1,000 to Malama Kai to support their work in ocean stewardship and maintaining Maui’s mooring system.
“Malama Kai Foundation is a statewide nonprofit dedicated to ocean stewardship projects,” said Victoria Martocci, Mooring Working Group Maui Representative.
“This event is benefiting the Maui Moorings project which helps protect Maui’s reefs from anchor damage through the installation and maintenance of permanent underwater day- use mooring buoys that are for use by any vessel, private boaters and commercial boats alike,” said Martocci.
The next Blue’Aina Reef Cleanup will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on October 4th. Cost to participate is a $30 donation. To reserve a space call (408) 569-7986 or email [email protected].
