Oregon Woman Rescued in Strong Currents at Kapalua

A 60-year-old visitor was rescued from waters off of Kapalua Bay in West Maui on Sunday evening, Jan. 17, 2016.

Officials say firefighters responded to the scene at 5:46 p.m. for a report of a swimmer waving their arms in distress about 300 yards offshore.

Nāpili firefighters arrived at 5:53 p.m. to find the woman about 150 yards from shore trying to swim in.

A firefighter swam out and assisted the woman to shore at around 6 p.m.

Fire officials say the woman, from Portland, Oregon, was not able to overcome the strong ocean currents pulling her out to sea.

She was safely brought to shore and did not require any medical attention.
