Maui Ocean Center Celebrates 18 Years
The Maui Ocean Center celebrates 18 years during an anniversary event scheduled to take place this Sunday, March 13, 2016.
Company representatives say they have met thousands of kamaʻāina and visitors from around the world who share a common love for marine life since opening its doors in 1998.
The celebratory event includes: marine life presentations; nā mo‘olelo cultural activities; games and prizes; and displays by environmental and cultural organizations. The event will be emceed by Makalapua Kanuha with live music by the Kahaialiʻi Brothers as well as Kapali Keahi of Lahaina Grown, Pu‘uwai, the Kalama School Ukulele Band and Kupuna O Hale Maha‘olu.
Admission is free for youth 18 years of age and under; and 50% off general admission for kamaʻāina and US Military. (Must be purchased at the front gate with valid ID; Prices are not available online).
Marine Presentations
Get an up close look at marine animals from the shallow reef to the open ocean. The Maui Ocean Center’s team of marine naturalists, divers, and aquarists will present exhibits and interactive presentations. Guests can get hands-on with tide pool critters, check out various crustaceans at a Discovery Station, meet the Hawaiian green sea turtles, speak with a diver during Open Ocean dive presentations, and meet key eco-organizations including NOAA Fisheries and NOAA Sanctuaries-HIHW.
Na Mo‘olelo: Cultural Activities
Meet Hawaiian cultural practitioners and experience their mo‘olelo (story) of Hawaiian culture, lifestyle, and traditions. Various vendors and key community organizations will be present throughout the day, including the following areas of interest: Lawai‘a Upena (fishing net weaving); Hulu, feather work; Niu weaving (coconut frond crafting); Friends of Moku‘ula; Hui O Wa‘a Kaulua; Maui Nui Botanical Garden; and Stone and koa wood carving.
Opening and closing ceremonies will take place including special recognition for long-term Maui Ocean Center employees. Games, prizes, and anniversary cake will be provided throughout the day while supplies last.
