Crews Douse Two Small Brush Fires Early Saturday Morning

Maui fire crews responded to two small early morning brush fires; one in Pāʻia and the other in Launiupoko on Saturday April 30, 2016.

At 12:07 a.m. while Pāʻia firefighters were returning to station from a prior call, they saw an orange glow coming from the same area of a previous brush fire reported above Maliko Gulch on Friday morning.

Because of limited access, the crew hiked up from Hāna Highway and found a separate 25 x 50 foot brush fire burning a short distance above a fire that occurred around 7:15 a.m. Friday morning.

Part of the crew stayed to monitor the fire while the rest went back to their station to retrieve their mini pumper in order to gain access to the fire.

The fire was contained at 1:07 a.m. and extinguished at 2:46 a.m. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

At 4:48 a.m., Engine 3 and Tanker 3 out of Lahaina, responded to a brush fire on Honoapiʻilani Highway in Launiupoko.

Crews were on scene at 4:59 a.m. and found a 10 x 150 foot strip of grass burning on the mauka shoulder of the highway, about a quarter mile south of Launiupoko Park.

The highway was closed briefly until the fire was brought under control and extinguished at 5:15 a.m. Cause of the fire was undetermined.
