The Alexander Academy Performing Company will present Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland June 4 and 5 at Seabury Hall’s ‘A‘ali‘ikuhonua Creative Arts Center.

Three performances throughout the weekend will showcase over 180 dancers, ages 3 to adult.

This year’s production will incorporate ballet, contemporary dance and musical theater to create the magic of Wonderland onstage.

AAPC, the nonprofit branch of the donation-based studio Alexander Academy of Performing Arts (AAPA), presents a full-length production each year as part of the academy’s comprehensive dance training program. The show also fulfills its mission to provide affordable, high-quality performance opportunities to Maui’s student dancers.

The Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland ballet had its world premiere at The Royal Ballet in London in 2011. Having been created for the stage relatively recently, this ballet depends on special effects as much as imaginative choreography to tell the story of Alice’s encounters.

AAPC’s rendition of the production will include its own share of theatrical illusions, using lighting and creative casting to set the ballet’s other-worldly atmosphere.

Alexander Academy faculty approached the challenge of portraying the fantastical storyline with its student cast by adopting an inventive vision that allows for each age group to participate while staying true to the spirit of Wonderland’s colorful characters.

The choreography is the original work of AAPA Teachers Amelia Couture, Hallie Hunt and Absalon Figueroa.

“We are very excited to continue sharing the magic of the performing arts with another well-loved story,” said AAPA Executive Director Danelle Watson. “The characters and dancing in Alice are sure to entertain the public and create lasting memories for our dancers. Our audiences have received us each year with such high esteem, and I am always delighted to hear our reputation is living up to our mission.”
