2016 Hyundai Tournament Raises $350K for Charity

The Hyundai Tournament of Champions raised more than $350,000 for Maui charities during the 2016 event.

Since the tournament to Maui in 1999, the event and host organizations have donated a total of more than $5.6 million to Hawaiʻi community charities, event organizers said.

The six primary beneficiaries of the 2016 event include:

• Boy Scouts of America – Maui County Council;
• Friends of the Children’s Justice Center;
• Hale Makua Health Services;
• J. Walter Cameron Center;
• Ka Lima O Maui; and
• Lahainaluna High School Foundation.

As part of their relationship with the tournament, the designated beneficiaries assisted in promoting the event, offsetting costs and providing volunteers.

Additionally, donations were made to:

• Hawaiʻi State Junior Golf Association and Maui Junior Golf participants for their commitment to promoting and growing the game of golf among Hawaiʻi’s youth;
• Lahaina Intermediate School Educational Foundation;
• Women Helping Women;
• Maui Food Bank;
• Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui – Lahaina Clubhouse;
• Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Center; and
• Hospice Maui.

Several other local non-profits also benefited from the tournament through its Golf for Maui Charities program, which gave 501(c)(3) organizations the opportunity to promote the sale of tickets to this year’s tournament and receive 100% of the net proceeds.

In addition to the charitable contributions above, there was also a significant donation made to Kapʻiolani Medical Center for Women and Children via Hyundai’s Hope on Wheels program and the Hope on Wheels 5K held during tournament week. Hyundai Hope On Wheels is a nonprofit organization committed to helping kids fight cancer and provides funds for pediatric cancer research.

A special donation of $10,000 was made to the Western Golf Association’s Evans Scholars Foundation in memory of Gary Planos, who served as Tournament Chairman during the Mercedes-Benz Championship era.

The 2017 Tournament of Champions returns to The Plantation Course at Kapalua in Jan. 4-8.
