Helicopter Salvage of Grounded Vessel at “Little Beach” Completed
Mākena State Park reopened by 7 a.m. today May 9, 2016, following an early morning helicopter salvage operation to fly out a vessel that grounded in late April on an inaccessible rocky point of the park shoreline between “Big Beach” and “Little Beach.” The park was closed during the operation to ensure public safety.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation hired a salvage contractor to secure the boat with lines, then lift it by helicopter to a truck parked in the Mākena State Park parking lot. It will then be towed to the company’s salvage yard where it will be assessed and further disposal will occur.
