Flower-onlyThe Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset will award one $2,500 academic scholarship to a graduating senior who lives in West Maui, Lāna‘i or Moloka‘i and attends a Maui, Lāna‘i or Moloka‘i high school.

The student should demonstrate superior academic abilities, involvement in school activities and a winning character profile. The student must be pursuing a field of study that will benefit the environment.

The scholarship highlights the club’s commitment to support the educational goals of local youth.

“Knowledge is power and we are thrilled to help a senior student reach his or her educational goals,” said Youth Service Chair Nancy Montoya.

The academic award also reflects the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset’s focus on environmental initiatives, a core mission that is realized through sustainability projects and its “Go Green” Third Saturday Recycling event held monthly at the Lahaina Cannery Mall.

“We’re excited to expand our “Go Green” programs with the launch of this new sustainability scholarship,” said President Sandy Schneider. “We’re pleased to support the education of a local student who will have the opportunity to continue sustainability efforts on Maui well into the future.”

The scholarship will be provided in two installments. The first, for one-half of the scholarship amount, will be dispersed upon proof of enrollment in the college of choice. The second installment will be presented upon proof of enrollment in the second semester at the same college.
